439848 " 2042 11 Sect in contact. Section heard digging approximately 40 metres WEST of ambush position and then some movement which they engaged with 0.30 and 0.50 calibre machine guns, Claymore mines and M79 grenades. The enemy immediately returned fire with machine gun (probably an RPD), RPGs and possibly hand grenades. Mortar illumination was fired from KYLE and then artillery illumination from LE LOI. Shortly afterwards a flare POSSUM arrived on the scene and the artillery commenced firing HE from LOIS into the area 400 metres WSW of the contact area. Due to persistent enemy movement back to the original digging area each time the HE and illumination ceased, two SHADOW aircraft were called in and artillery HE fired throughout the remainder of the night. Contact was finally broken atapxy 0500 hours and at first light 11 Sectionundertook a limited sweep (limited by jungle density). Later in the morning 31 Section brought in some infantry from 8 RAR who carried out a far more detailed sweep for 1000 metres around the contact area. Nothing of any significance was produced by either sweep. Judging by the weapons the enemy used and his persistent attempts to regain the initial contact area it is considered that the enemy force probably constituted elements of K8, the heavy weapons company of D440. An interesting observation resulting from this contact is that 11 Sect was the only element of the Cavalry not to have been moved after its original insertion and the only element to have contacted any enemy force. This observation includes the infantry battalion ambushes and patrols.
434834 " 0940 1 Tp HQ, on their third day in this ambush position, saw and engaged an apparent enemy force. This apparent enemy force turned ot to be C Coy 8 RAR who had been directed by their Battalion Headquarters to move into the vicinity of the old FSPB PAT. Unfortunately the headquarters failed to notify the company of the proximity of the Cavalry ambush and also failed to notify the Cavalry headquarters of C Coy's mov. This engagement resulted in three infantrymen being wounded, one very seriously and one seriously.

This incident resulted in 3 enemy KIA (BC), one CHICOM 7.62 mm pistol, three packs, 1 ounces of CHICOM explosive and a quantity of documents because captured. (An NVA prisoner, captured by B Company 8 RAR on 1? Jul 70, was a member of the group until just prior to its contact with 11 Sect. He identified one of the KIA as the 2IC of K5H, the medical company of 274 MF Regt. Background     At 110830H at YS370690 the D&E Pl contacted a group of 20 VC from CHAU DUC District who were dressed in camouflage clothing and very well equipped. The group had come from HOA LONG from where they had gained a good resupply. This contact resulted in 2 VC KIA (BC), 3 VC WIA (BT), a quantity of documents, 400 lbs of rice, 100 lbs of assorted foodstuffs.
YS402632 Midnight 8/C/8, commanded by a recently promoted sergeant, sighted 50-60 VC entering HOA LONG. Rather than engage at the sighting range of 10-150 metres, the platoon commander allowed the group egress to the village, resighted his ambush to cover what he considere to be the enemy's withdrawal route and then informed his Hqs. 1 Tp was immediately placed on standby to move and enemy movement awaited. At120315H two separate groups, each of 35-80 enemy, left HOA LONG via the anticipated route. 8 Platoon engaged the first group, receiving a very small volume of return fire from this group and none from the second group some 50 metres away. At this point 1 Tp left NUI DAT to assist in mopping up. Directed by a POSSUM flareship, Cpl WEBB in C/S 81 located and engaged a group of six VC in a clump of bushes. His initial 0.50 calibre burst disintegrated one VC and the remaining five promptly surrendered. At the conclusion of the contact, the enemy group were identified as belonging to CHAU DUC District and C41 Concentrated Company. Results from this contact were 19 VC KIA (BC), six detainees and one Hoi Chanh, assorted weapons and documents, 550 lbs of rice and approximately 100 lbs of other assorted foodstuffs.

791690 " 1310 13A detonated an estimated 30 lb pressure mine resultinig in one Bushman Scout KIA and 10 Australians WIA, including the vehicle crew, Cpl CHALK and Tpr SLOCOMBE. Both crew members were evacuated to 1 AFH VUNG TAU and are in a satisfactory condition. 13A was the first Australian carrier with additional belly armour to detonate a mine of reasonable size. The explosion occurred at the rear of the vehicle, penetrating the fuel tank sponson removing the rear LH suspension units and blowing the belly armour off. However, the explosion did not penetrate the belly of the hull. Undoubtedly, in this case, the additional belly armour prevented more serious casualties from occurring.
